Lizzie's Corner

by Lizzie Lottman

Hello, I’m Lizzie Lottman. I hope that my column will be entertaining and useful. Over the months, I shall recommend books, music and artist that are worthy to be known by the people of the world.

I am an artist and writer from Ann Arbor Michigan. I am probably the only person left in humanity that sends letters in the mail for fun (shocker).  I love music! Whenever I do anything I’m usually listening to a soundtrack too; if you find me not listening to music, writing or drawing I am probably tap dancing.   If I’m not doing any of these things, it’s the apocalypse.  I love my friends and family, but I also like being alone.

I have fun doing basically anything. I believe in spending all of my free time reading, and I hope that by me recommending books to you, that you will also spend your free time reading. Lizzie Lottman, out.

 Book! Recommendation of de Month

Well, this month I find my self reading Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, and feeling quite strongly about it. The main character touches on many subjects that in this moment are quite important to me.

One of the things in this book that really makes you think is the characters opinion of religion. I am talking about the passage where he is discussing the disciples. It is a very interesting passage. I wont go into too much detail because you’re supposed to read the book! ^__^

I also find the writing style entertaining. The language is a little harsh, but it makes me laugh. Say if I was describing my self, it would read something like this: “ So one day, I’m talkin’ to Lizzie and all of a sudden old Lizzie goes, “I wonder if there is a heaven” I say to her, “Why should I care?”” I think that’s really fun and different.

Mostly I find this book to be about self discovery. You’ll find that I love books about a character that faces many complicated struggles. I like to know how different people handle them selves.

If I collected anything, it would be reactions.

Music! Recommendation of de Month

Currently in my CD player, I have The Phantom of the Opera the original motion picture. I absolutely adore this soundtrack! Number one thing to know- I am a soundtrack junkie. I have listened and bought an abundance of them and Phantom is definitely a gem. They chose the perfect cast to start with, but the voices are amazing. Most of the music still gives me chills. The first chords of the overture are hair bristling. Let’s see, right now I’m listing to “The Point of No Return” AMAZING vocals, uh. Even through the music I really feel for the characters. The orchestration is a little French horn happy, but it still is awesome. My favorite verse in the entire soundtrack is when Christine is telling the Phantom that it does not matter to her how he looks but the reason she pushes away is that “…It’s with in your soul where the true distortion lies.” I still cry when the Phantom tells Christine “ This face which earned a mother’s fear and loathing. A mask my first unfeeling scrap of clothing…”  I love this soundtrack, play and movie. People will say that the lyrics are the sappiest words ever, and I will respond, “Then you have no heart.”
