Jason Monios is an Australian writer who now lives in Scotland. He completed a Ph.D. in 2001, investigating the concept of the vortex in the poetry of Ezra Pound. His

Her forehead when I kissed it

was tepid;

a thin layer of cooling grease,

transparent, binding,

a feature unknown

on her welcoming cheeks

that flush with passion

or pale in surprise

at my insistence

on her uncharitable lack

of affection.
